Government Changes to Vehicle Excise Duty - 1st April 2017 onwards
As of the 1st April 2017 onwards, vehicles 1st registered will have Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) applied in a new way. The First Year Rates will continue to vary dependant on recorded carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions of the vehicle (in a similar way to the previous system although with, in some cases, significantly larger amounts). The standard rate, from year two onwards, is where the main change is going to be with a flat rate of £140 per year being charged.
There are some exceptions to this: -
1. where the manufacturers stated CO2 emissions is 0g/km.
2. where the intial, manufacturer stated, list price is greater than £40,000.
Outlined in the table below is the new VED system rates for cars first registered on or after 1st April 2017: -
|CO2 emissions (g/km)||First year rate||Standard Rate*
(year two onwards)
|More than 255||£2,000||£140|
*where the initial manufacturer list price of the car is in excess of £40,000 an additional £310 per year will be payable for five years.
